What is Trauma
Trauma is a psychological response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, often leaving them feeling helpless and emotionally shattered. It can be caused by various incidents, such as accidents, natural disasters, physical or emotional abuse, or witnessing violence. Trauma can affect a person’s mental, emotional, and even physical well-being, leading to symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, emotional numbness, and difficulty concentrating. Recovery from trauma involves therapy, emotional support, and, in some cases, medication to manage its lasting effects
Conditions of Trauma
A person may be diagnosed with trauma-related conditions like PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) if they experience these symptoms for more than one month after the traumatic event:
- Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or distressing dreams related to the event
- Avoidance of thoughts, feelings, or reminders of the trauma
- Negative changes in mood or thinking, such as feelings of detachment or negative beliefs
- Heightened arousal, irritability, or hypervigilance
- Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
- Emotional numbness or inability to experience positive emotions
